Justice Connect is a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission.

  • Our service provides legal advice, education and self-help resources for Australian charities and not-for-profits.

You might find the answer to your question(s) in our resources and we encourage you to look there first.

We prioritise giving legal advice to Australian not-for-profit organisations and social enterprises that help marginalised or disadvantaged members of the community or deliver services in rural regional and remote locations in Australia and can’t afford or have difficulty in accessing legal help.

Learn more about when we can help and who we can’t help.

If you think your organisation may be eligible for legal advice from us, then please proceed to complete the application for assistance.

On average this form will take 5 minutes of your time to complete.

How we use and what we do with your personal and other information

The personal and other information that you provide to us in this application is used to make an assessment about whether we are able to provide you with a service or refer you to another service provider.

We respect your privacy and confidential information, and have designed robust systems to protect your information.

Some of our services are delivered by our lawyers in our pro bono network. We may share your information with these lawyers for the purposes of finding you legal assistance.

We collect, use, disclose and store your personal and other information in accordance with our privacy policy, which you can view here.

We will not share your information with other service providers (other than lawyers that we are trying to recruit to provide you with legal assistance) without first seeking your consent.

  • We are only able to communicate with people who have authority to make a legal enquiry on behalf of an organisation. That means that you must either be an Executive Officer/CEO, Chairperson or board member(s) of your organisation OR someone who is authorised by any of those people to make an enquiry on behalf of the organisation. We are unable to assist individual members of organisations.
  • We have limited capacity to provide advice to new organisations

Before making an enquiry, we encourage you to read our resources which guide you through the steps required to establish a not-for-profit organisation. In particular:

Getting Started Decision Framework (https://nfplaw.org.au/gettingstarted): This is a series of specific questions which can help you to decide which legal structure may be best for your situation. Once you have answered the questions about your proposed organisation, you are provided with a report with information to assist you in the next steps in setting it up.

Choosing a legal structure (https://nfplaw.org.au/legalstructure): Provides an overview of the options available for not-for-profit organisations, including if you are looking to set up a social enterprise (https://www.nfplaw.org.au/socialenterprise).

Registering as a charity (https://nfplaw.org.au/charity): Explains what a charity is and how to register a charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission.

    Tax
(http://www.nfplaw.org.au/tax): Explains applying for tax concessions including deductible gift recipient (DGR) endorsement.

Fundraising and holding events (http://www.nfplaw.org.au/tax): We have a guide to fundraising (https://nfplaw.org.au/fundraising) in Australia as well as a checklist for holding events (https://nfplaw.org.au/events)

We also recommend registering for one of our regular Getting Started webinars. You can find our upcoming webinar schedule here (http://www.nfplaw.org.au/training-individuals).

  • Please provide one or more planning documents (eg. aims and purposes, details of planned programs/services, financial plan or funding sources). The more information you can provide, the more likely we will be able to help.

    • Unfortunately we cannot assist

This form must be completed by either the Executive Officer/CEO, Chairperson or board member(s) of your organisation OR by someone who is authorised by any of those people to make an enquiry on behalf of the organisation.

Justice Connect’s Not-for-profit Law service can only assist not-for-profit organisations (rather than individuals involved in organisations).

Our online resources at www.nfplaw.org.au cover a wide range of topics and may be able to assist you with your question.
